Electrical Panel Upgrades for EV Charging in La Habra
Service upgrades and panel work that create the capacity a charger circuit needs, common in the older tracts along La Habra Boulevard and Idaho Street.

When the Panel Has to Come First
Sometimes the honest answer to a charger question is that the panel cannot take one yet. Electrical panel upgrades for EV charging in La Habra are a real part of our work, and the reason is simply the housing stock. A great many homes in this city were built when 100-amp service was generous, and a modern household with air conditioning, an electric dryer, and a 48-amp charger asks more of that service than it was designed to give. La Habra EV Charger runs the load calculation first and tells you which category you are in. If capacity exists, we say so and skip the upgrade. If it does not, we move the service to 200 amps, replace the panel, coordinate the shutdown with Southern California Edison, and hand the whole thing back inspected. Then the charger becomes a short second visit.
What a Panel Upgrade Covers
Panel work is the largest job on this site, so the scope is spelled out in detail before anything is scheduled.
- A documented NEC Article 220 load calculation for the whole house, which either justifies the upgrade or proves you do not need it, and you get a copy either way.
- A new 200-amp main service panel or main breaker panel, with a bus rating and interrupting capacity correct for your service, and enough spare spaces for the charger plus future circuits.
- Replacement of the service entrance conductors, meter main, and mast or lateral connection as required to carry the upgraded ampacity safely.
- Full coordination with Southern California Edison for the service disconnect and reconnect, including scheduling the outage window and meeting the utility crew.
- A new grounding electrode system where the existing one is undersized, absent, or no longer compliant, including ground rods, bonding of water and gas piping, and a properly sized grounding electrode conductor.
- Transfer and correct labeling of every existing branch circuit, so the finished panel directory tells the truth about what each breaker does.
- Replacement of any Zinsco, Federal Pacific, or other known-hazardous panel discovered during the work, since these turn up regularly in tracts of this era and cannot be safely reused.
- AFCI and GFCI protection brought up to the current code edition on the circuits that require it as part of the panel replacement.
- The dedicated EV charger circuit installed at the same time where you want it, which is materially cheaper than bringing us back for it as a separate job.
- City of La Habra permit filed, inspection scheduled and attended by us, all corrections cleared at our cost, and the closed permit plus load calculation delivered to you in writing.
How a Service Upgrade Actually Runs
- Step 1
Assessment and load calculation
We come out, open the panel, read the meter, and record what is actually connected. That produces a load calculation, which is the document that decides whether you need this job at all. The assessment is free and you keep the calculation regardless of what you do next. Roughly a third of the homes we assess turn out not to need the upgrade.
- Step 2
Permit and utility scheduling
Once you approve the flat rate we file with the City of La Habra and open the disconnect request with Southern California Edison. The utility window is the part nobody controls, and it is usually where the calendar time goes. We keep you updated on it rather than leaving you to wonder, and we book the install day only once the window is confirmed.
- Step 3
Changeover day and inspection
Power is out for most of the working day, so plan for that. We set the new panel, land every circuit, rebuild the grounding, and label the directory before energizing. The inspector comes out and we meet them. Most upgrades are inspected and closed within a few days of the changeover, and the charger circuit is live the same day if we installed it alongside.
Why We Are a Careful Choice for Panel Work
We would rather talk you out of it
A panel upgrade is the most expensive thing on this website, which is exactly why we lead with the load calculation. If the arithmetic says your existing service can carry a derated charger, we tell you and do the smaller job. A company that quotes upgrades before calculating is guessing with your money.
The grounding gets rebuilt, not reused
Grounding is the part of a panel upgrade nobody sees and inspectors always check. On houses of this vintage the existing electrode system is frequently undersized or the bonding is missing entirely. We rebuild it to current code as part of the job rather than hoping the inspector does not look.
One trade, one permit, one crew
Because we do the panel and the charger circuit together, there is no second mobilization, no second permit, and nobody blaming the other trade when something does not line up. It is also the cheapest way to end up with both, by a clear margin.
Find Out If Your La Habra Panel Needs Upgrading
The load calculation is free, and it is the only honest way to answer the question. Call and we will come out, do the arithmetic, and tell you plainly whether this job is necessary. If it is not, you have lost nothing and gained a document worth keeping.
